- Leader sequence:
A short, hydrophobic sequence at the N-terminal end of a protein. Its function is to transfer that protein across a membrane (such as the endoplasmic reticulum or cell membrane) by inserting itself into the membrane. After translocation, the leader sequence is cleaved from the remainder of the protein, leaving a fully soluble protein.
- Leukemia:
Malignant diseases in which the bone marrow and other blood-forming organs produce increased numbers of leucocytes.
